Tall Dating Site: Tallsingles 49

What should be the minimum height for women on a tall dating site? A new site says 5’5, as this increases guys’ chances of finding their ideal partner, given they are less selective for height. For tall women though, this means competing with average height women. The founder, who is interviewed below, is willing to change the threshold. But first, let’s vote on what it should be. Let’s assume the limit for men remains at 6′, as no one seems to have an issue with that. Also, assume that the site is for all of Europe and North America. Women please vote with the red side, men with the blue.

Update: With over 700 votes in, the clear trend, aside for the 5’11 anomaly, is guys feel the threshold should be 5’10 and ladies feel it should be 6′. Note that the traffic here is mainly tall people though, so this introduces some bias. Also, the poll demonstrates an unconstrained directional selection by tall women for a higher threshold. In retrospect, the poll should have gone beyond 6′! A common sentiment was that if it is to be called a ‘tall’ dating site, then it should be restricted to tall for both genders. The word tall has varying definitions, see the link for more info. For the ongoing discussion on this topic, see this forum topic.

Below is an interview with Richard, the founder and CEO of the tall dating sites, TallSingles.co.uk and tall.singles.

Tall Singles the Tall Dating Site

So what made you start the tall dating site tallsingles?

I’m 6ft 7 tall myself and when I was dating I realized how difficult it was to meet and date tall single women. I would often go to bars with my friends on β€œboys nights out” hoping to meet women, however on most occasions I would find that all the women there were far too short. It became very frustrating and I thought there must be a better way for tall people to meet. One evening I looked for a good website name and tallsingles.co.uk was chosen.

What makes you different from other dating sites?

Well, we restrict our members by height, men have to be above 6′ and women above 5’5. So tall single people joining our site will get exactly what they want, other tall single people. We have also built a very big tall community that shares anything tall related, much of this content is shared on our blog.

How does it work?

You can join our site for free. You just need to enter a few basic details about yourself and verify your email address. Once you’re a free member you can search other people’s profiles, send winks to people you like the look of or if you want to send a message. We have the free membership so that you can have a look around the site, see if there is anyone in your area that you would like to date and decide whether or not it is for you.

What is the paid membership option?

If you like the site and you would like to join up then you will need to upgrade to the paid membership. This opens several other great features, the most important being the ability to read messages sent from other members so that you can arrange a date.

How much does it cost?

It depends on the length of membership, a 6-month membership on the UK site is Β£79.95, a 3-month membership Β£49.95 and a 1-month membership is Β£24.95. We are up to 72% cheaper than Match.com. Plus I am happy to give all readers of your blog a 50% discount on a 1-month membership, they can get this by entering β€œ50TALL” into the offer code at checkout. We think it is a small price to pay in order to find your ideal partner.

Is it safe?

As long as you are careful, it is very safe. We have lots and lots of practical advice on our blog about staying safe online. Our main advice is 1) Never give out personal details to members such as email address or phone number until you have been on a couple of dates, 2) If you do meet up always travel to the meeting place on your own and 3) Make sure you meet somewhere that will be fairly busy and will have plenty of other people around.

How many members do you have?

We have over 1.5 million members from all across the UK. It is a fantastic tall community of tall people looking for love. New people are joining the site every day!

Have you had any marriages?

Yes, over the last year we have had over 80 marriages and many more engagements. It turns out that I was not the only one with a tall dating issue. Many, many people have contacted us to tell us how brilliant the site is and how great it is to have this service available to them. It is very humbling for all the team to hear such fantastic news.

Did you meet your current partner on tallsingles.co.uk?

Actually no I didn’t and we both still laugh about it. At the time, I had only just started tall singles and I met my partner at work. I think what is really important is that the site might not be the way that a tall person meets their perfect partner, but it gives them a way to possibly find someone. You never know when you will find. I wasn’t actually looking for love when it happened to me. I just think it’s great that we have been able to provide a service which tall people love.

What is your advice to people joining your site?

I have three key pieces of advice for when someone joins the site. Firstly YOU should upload a photo. Profiles with a photo get up to 70% more views than profiles without a photo. Secondly, you should take the time to complete your entire profile. Your profile is made up of a mixture of multiple choice and free text questions. Our matching profiles use these to decide who should appear in search results. So if you want your photo to show in front of the right person you need to complete your profile. Lastly, log into the site on a regular basis. Search results are displayed based on the time you last logged in, the most recent go to the top of the search results.

What’s next?

Well we have had so much success starting www.tallsingles.co.uk, that we have decided to expand overseas, so we now have a tall dating site in the US, you will find it at www.tall.singles.

Wow, that’s great! Any thing else you would like to add?

Our mission is to make sure everyone tall finds tall love! It really is as simple as that. Knowing how hard it was for me to find someone tall enough, I really want to make it easier for all the tall people out there.

Constructive Criticism. What works: Great idea potentially for tall women to find taller men. What doesn’t work: Get the spinners (short chics) off your site. Your minimum height for women is 5’5″ and sounds like this is a site for single men who are tall. Frankly you can go on normal dating sites and find women within that height range. What could be improved: Women have to be over 5’10” + and men must be taller than 6’2″ + then and only then would you have a population demographic that actually works for both tall men and women. Thoughts?

    • Erika Elizabeth Ervin

Yes we are selective according to height, needing protection as a biological imperative. Tall women want taller men and don’t want to compete with spinners who take the taller men off the market. NOTHING INFURIATES ME MORE THAN A SPINNER WITH A 7′ MAN. However, you site doesn’t cater to tall women at all with those factors. Sorry Tall Sam

    • Valentina Arriaga-Rangel

I echo your sentiment, but I have tried in the past (2007) another “tall” dating site, my experience was that, yes, you found tall men and women, but you also found the creeper that said “I’m 5’7” but I love tall ladies”or the guy that said “I’m 6’2″ and when meeting turned out to be really 5’10” and when questioned about it would say “well, last time I went to the Dr I measured 6’2″, I must be shrinking” (when you know they embellished their profile)

      • Anonymous

LOL!! A woman can legitimately look for a tall man, but a man that is looking for a tall woman is “creepy”. Get a grip Valentina; everybody has the right to have their own preference.

    • Angie Perdios

I had a date like that once and asked the guy if he had jumped in the dryer before coming out for the date…he asked me why and I said I’m wondering if that’s what made you shrink! And then I asked him in which universe he measures 6ft?? ?

    • Valentina Arriaga-Rangel

I only met 2 guys through that site, the 5’10” that after swearing that he must be “age-shrinking” that then jumped to saying that I probably was way over 6′ (when I know that I am between 5’11.5″ and 6′) and a bona fide 6’5″ guy, whom I dated for almost 2 years… wonderful to have somebody taller to dance with!

    • Mark Dixon

My wife is only 5ft2 and I’m 6ft6. I get your point though about the dating site. Men have to be 6ft3 and ladies at least 5ft10 for it to be a true dating site for tall people.

  • Kristian Mejer Hunderup

i agree i dont know what he was thinking setting the line at 5’5” for women, thats like not tall at all, in England(where the site is from) the female average height is 5’4,25” so its not even an inch above average. and please men at 6′ is that tall now? get in the game..

  • Richard

Hi SiobhΓ‘n, Its Richard here the owner of tallsingles.co.uk. Firstly I can only apologise for the response you received. I am not sure why you cannot register at the moment, I certainly don’t have anything against Irish people in fact I would love for you to become a member. I have set our technical team onto this one immediately, but this might take some time. I would love to make the site worldwide but there is a great deal of red tape in doing that, we are working on it!. So that I can personally make sure this is dealt with please can you direct message me on twitter @tallsingles. As a goodwill gesture I will also pass you a discount code. I hope that helps and once again I am very sorry. Regards, Richard

  • Richard

Hi Erika, Kristian. Thanks for your comments, I am sorry you feel that way about the height requirements. After talking a great deal to our members we realised that we had to lower the height for women. This is because women like to date taller men, but it doesn’t matter how much taller they are. Many of our women members who are 5’5” are seeking men above 6’5”, can I really deny those men the chance to meet the woman of their dreams? It is very difficult to set a height range that works for everyone. The fact we have a height limit at all separates us from all the other supposedly “tall” dating sites out there. Thanks, Richard (tallsingles.co.uk)

  • Sharon Spidle Speer

You two beat me to what I was going to say. His height requirements are way to low to be considered a tall dating site. They are probably that low so that he can make more money because the pool of people who qualify gets smaller the higher the beam is raised.

    • Erika Elizabeth Ervin

Tall Sam and the tall guys can surf the normal dating sites for trim. Women are the biological choosers, I’m not interested in breeding and I’m transgender, so I’m more interested in someone at my height or taller. I don’t want to give up, because of all the awareness out there, yet I always keep an open mind to new possibilities.

    • Sharon Spidle Speer

Little People of America consider their tall to be 4’10”. So that only leaves a window of 7″ to be considered average for a women! And we know that’s not right…

    • Erika Elizabeth Ervin

The standard deviation spread is smaller statistically for little people. The taller you are the greater the statistical average spread in standard deviation.

    • Sharon Spidle Speer

I didn’t realize it is from that site. I tried to do it but couldn’t figure out how to send. If for that purpose, I don’t see how it would help determine height requirement as some short people consider themselves tall yet do not meet the TCI height requirement. I considered myself to be very tall at 6’1″ until I joined TCI. So around the general population I see myself as very tall. Around TCI I see myself as tall and around our really very tall members I feel short.

  • Erica Wilder

What a joke. Completely offensive toward tall women. You aren’t a tall woman in my mind unles 5’10” or over. I wouldn’t pay to join this site.

  • Cindy Riddles

Maybe we should direct our comments and criticisms to the guy who runs the dating site. And I agree that 5’5″ is not tall for women in my universe.

    • Valentina Arriaga-Rangel

I am in the middle in my family height chart, but I come from a place where the male average height is 5’3″ to 5’4″, so, always had been considered a giant…

  • Andrew Lowry

This is interesting and I think I’ll join. Usually when I encounter a tallette in a social setting i get the cold shoulder, but the short ladies don’t hesitate to chat me up. What gives? I’m 6’7.

  • Richard

Hi to everyone who replied, it is always great to get feedback and I have taken the time to read every response. It’s just a shame I live in England so was in bed when all the fun was going on. I just wanted to respond on a couple of points: 1) I am not setting the height low to earn more revenue, the site is currently loss making, I actually set it up to help “tall” people, that is the primary aim here. 2) no one seemed to say that 6’0” for a man was too low, so imagine if we raise the height for women to 5’10”, the guy who is 6’0” only has his pick of women between the heights of 5’10” and 6’0”. Is that good for him? So as you have all shown such an interest and the US site is fairly new I am prepared to consider changing the height requirements. The database I have built behind the site, requires me to keep within certain ranges, so the options are: Option 1: Keep as it is (5’5” to 5’8”), Option 2 (5’9” to 6’0), Option 3 (6’1” to 6’4”), Option 4 (6’5” to 6’8). Please reply to this post with your option and the one with the highest number of votes is the one we will change to. In order to then show your support any of you who are single, then need to join for free. How does that sound? Thanks from the site owner Richard (tall.singles) and thanks also to the tall community here for providing such interesting feedback.

  • Mike Tunstall

I guess I’m a little surprised from reading the interview, that this site has 1.5million members in the UK. I’ll observe quietly that on current UK population numbers, married/single, men/women etc, 2.2% of the total population of the UK has joined this site. These membership numbers are the same as Zoosk and eHarmony in the UK.

Two outcomes from that – firstly it isn’t very exclusive and secondly, I am in the wrong business!.

Oh and Elite Singles in the UK claims 13 million members or 19% of UK population. source is top10bestdatingsites.co.uk – which my itself be wrong of course…….

  • Farty

It may come as to a surprise to some delusional ladies out there but..

    – Only a small percentage of men are over 6′
    – And there’s lots of dudes who are around the 5’7″-5’10” range that are way better looking than most guys 6′ & over are.

  • Robin Kozelka

Well based on the Height Percentile Calculator on this very site, the equivalent for females would be 5′ 6.5″ tall. A man at 6′ is in the top 17.8% of the male population, so to be fair, woman would have to be at least 5’6″-5’7″. Nice try though for the women who are 5’10″+. I can see why they would like to keep the tall men for themselves. Full disclosure, I’m 5’8″ tall and I routinely wear 4′ heels, so 6′ only puts me at the same height in 90% of my evening shoes. But don’t worry- I live in San Francisco, so I’m GU anyway and also disqualified from registering.

  • Rocky

I never thought much about my height as a male 6’1” and being with women over like 20+ years from like 5’4” to 6’7” and all of them not like I am so perfect, but they all had issues and to be really honest taller women are very unique especially when they can embrace their height and not
let their stature control every situation. I prefer to look up at
an attractive woman rather than looking down, although when they can get past that it can be a great relationship.

  • Alisha Ross

This entire blog I find funny. ‘Ask Men’….uhhh cause they’re so insightful?? You don’t need to ask men anything. Their answer is sex. Always. Whatever has to do with sex or lead to sex, that’s the advice a dude’s gonna give you.
    Regards

5’5″ is not tall for women. Ridiculous that the founder of this site said he started the site as he found it hard to find a tall women. Should be a minimum of 5’7″ which is still not deemed tall by medical experts but the limit of 5’5″ means I would not bother joining this site. As a 5’10” woman I must be a damn giant.
